A need to push your limits, the sense of adventure? Fame? A carpe diem philosophy? Helping somebody else?<\/p>\n<p>What was the good enough reason for the passengers who boarded the submersible Titan at the end of last month, descending thousands of meters into the Atlantic Ocean?<\/p>\n<p>Reality depends on what we tell ourselves. And what we tell ourselves is influenced by our values, personal history, but also by the points of view that are accessible to us. And strangely (or not) the more perspectives we have access to, the more difficult it seems to make categorical judgments. Below are some alternative stories about Titan and its implosion; the point is not to choose a single one of them, but rather to understand that reality is not so simple to define.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A story about <strong><em>narcissism<\/em><\/strong>: a handful of people with significant financial possibilities believe they are above the rules that govern other mortals and driven by the desire to experience special thrills (ordinary things no longer satisfy them), put themselves in danger and lose their lives. It\u2019s a power trip badly ended.<\/li>\n<li>A tale of <strong><em>daring and adventure<\/em><\/strong>: 5 people who take risks &#8220;to boldly go where no man has gone before&#8221; (almost). It is humanity&#8217;s beautiful dream, courage and exploration as the fundamental drivers that help us push our limits and grow. It is the story of hunter-gatherer tribes, the story of Marco Polo, Vasco da Gama, Christopher Columbus, Magellan, Roald Amundsen, Neil Armstrong, Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and others like them.<\/li>\n<li>A story about <strong><em>business\u2019s greed<\/em><\/strong>: lately, firms that organize extreme expeditions start to be more and more prosperous. It seems that doubts about the safety on board the Titan submersible had already been raised in the past but ignored or even deliberately hidden: a former director of marine operations at OceanGate raised concerns about the safety of the experimental design and was fired at shortly.<\/li>\n<li>A story of <strong>innovation<\/strong> in technology and pushing the boundaries of science. The Titan submersible capsule was considered technologically innovative (with a hull made of carbon fiber contributing significantly to weight reduction). Most of the members of the expedition had a &#8220;track record&#8221; of expeditions to various corners of the world or businesses based on innovation. Sometimes this fascination with innovation causes us to ignore reality.<\/li>\n<li>A story about <strong>extreme pride<\/strong> bringing us down (the story of Icarus): E-mail exchange between deep sea exploration expert Rob McCallum and Stockton Rush, CEO of OceanGate shows how the latter takes all safety warnings as personal insults. (Anticipating disaster, McCallum warns Rush that in his rush to reach the Titanic he is merely mirroring the Titanic&#8217;s 1912 slogan: &#8220;this ship is unsinkable.&#8221; Rush interprets the warnings as a &#8220;serious personal insult\u201d, an attempt by competitors to block his access to the market).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Disturbing, right? Equally disturbing was the media reception turning the tragedy into entertainment (a kind of blockbuster or a reality show) and the reaction of the whole world paying more attention to this event, although at the same time a boat with more than 700 migrants dive into the waters of the Mediterranean. This reaction, which at first glance is hypocritical or at least superficial had to do with our human nature, in the sense of complex psychological mechanisms that have been activated in all of our minds. It does not mean that it is OK to react like this, but rather it is an encouragement not to be deceived: the unexamined mind is populated by many traps, shadows, smoke and mirrors.<\/p>\n<p>(Drop me a line at cami@themind.ro if you want to understand more about the mechanisms above).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Which would be a good enough reason for you to do something risky (aka putting your life in danger)?
