The way our modern life is structured, September is one of the most ambivalent months: it carries with it the nostalgia of parting with summer (as a time of endless youth, of laughter and lack of problems), ominous hesitation in the face of adult responsibilities, as well as the shy and insecure hope of new beginnings.<\/p>\n
Look at how you experience September: is it the same as any other month? See how many questions you\u2019ll answer positively:<\/p>\n
Are you trying to “steal” another weekend at the sea or on a mountain peak (“now, while the sun is still up”)? Are you wondering where this summer went so fast? Are you surprised that it gets dark earlier? Are you sighing at the thought that now children will be back to school and there will be no more smooth traffic, no more free, spontaneous afternoons? Are you starting to look for new professional projects? Do you set yourself for some lifestyle changes (take up running, eating healthy, reading more, etc.)? Do you want to start learning something new (a new programming language, a foreign language, project management, etc.)?<\/p>\n
All are reflections of a life learned upon entering school, around the age of 6-7, at the beginning of autumn. At that age, time has a different meaning and flows differently (there is a lot of experimental research showing that children do indeed perceive time as moving more slowly compared to adults). When entering school, our life acquires new coordinates (in general, socio-cultural ones): responsibilities make their way into our lives, peer group plays an increasing role in our decisions, and free time becomes neatly measured. We associate the beginning of autumn with a certain sadness, sometimes with fear, but also with the excitement of something new. It’s September, back to school! We have the best pretext to start something new that might bring us excitement and joy!<\/p>\n
However, sometimes, once back from vacation, some of us might notice they\u2019re less motivated to work, and a lot of things irritate them at home. Nothing is quite right, a feeling of not having all the ducks in a row. Post-holiday blues is natural, but if it goes on too long and is also associated with an intense feeling of unbearable unhappiness, then it’s worth asking yourself some questions.<\/p>\n
Vacations, by giving us distance in time and space, can sometimes help us see things in perspective. It is not always pleasant what we understand in such moments about ourselves and how we live. However, I encourage you to reflect – maybe it’s about overwhelming personal or professional responsibilities, maybe it’s the feeling that you’re living on autopilot, and you don’t really see the point in getting up every morning, maybe you’re not living in accordance with your values \u200b\u200band the things important to you. Whatever the case, in the absence of this (repeated) exercise of reflection, nothing will miraculously change for the better.
